Window Lintel Corrosion Expansion
This problem is very common in old properties and is caused by the rusting of the external steel brick support beams above the window or door frames.
When steel rusts it expands and as the lintel support beam rusts it pushes the brick joins apart causing extensive cracking.
These cracks can become a structural problem to the home if not maintained correctly.
The steel lintels above the window and door frames should always be painted to protect them from the weather.
Any wall cracks however minor near the heads of a door or window frame should always be patched to prevent any water from entering the cavity wall.
If water enters the wall cavity it can sit on the steel lintel and cause rust which will lead to the above mentioned problem.
Galvanized steel lintels should always be used on the external brickwork of all new homes.
Although this is not a Building Code requirement for all areas it is a small additional cost that will save you in the future.
